From the Editor…
“Here at Ultra VW we strive to cover all aspects of the VW scene and are always proud to present a broader range of feature cars, events and archive material than any other VW magazine… and on that note, please allow me to introduce the June 2017 issue of Ultra VW!”
Over the past decade, the popularity of the humble VW Bus (read: ‘price’…) has continued to grow and what was once a cheap vehicle has now become as valuable and collectible as a bona fide premium classic car. With investors sinking some big bucks ($300k+) into early Deluxe Buses etc, it seems many of us are now priced out of the market.
Just recently I’ve been following some of the larger US classic car auctions (Barrett Jackson, Mecum etc), and it seems that classic Bugs are really starting to pick up momentum. For a long time folk have been asking ‘why are Buses so much more expensive than Bugs?’… well, it seems that ‘the right’ Beetles have finally started to pick up. They’re still nowhere near the ‘boomtime-Bus’ prices, but they are on the increase.
And it’s not necessarily the super-rare, early cars that are making the big numbers though, and more interestingly, it seems that a decent, original car is currently far more valuable than a perfectly restored example. I’m not talking about ‘rat look’ cars, but ‘survivors’. Original paint, character and parts make a Bug more desirable than a show stopper right now. So, I guess my point is that, if you’ve been promising yourself a Bug project for some time, now might be the time to get involved…
before prices go nuts!
